“she runs the mile”
I am often asked, “Is Adele a runner?”
We have a wall in our house where we post our goals for the year for all to see. It starts anew each January and we are free to add to our section if something pops up along the way. There’s an unspoken house rule that you can’t take things off the wall. If you come up short of a goal you need to acknowledge it and realize that priorities do shift from time to time. All part of growing up I suppose.
This year Adele posted she wanted to run a mile in 5:30 and go to regionals. Some may think that aggressive for a freshman running her second year of track but not our clan. Seemed perfectly reasonable before she laced up. In her first few races she ran 6:13, 6:03 and 6:19. Frustration was creeping in. Then she clocked in at 6:03 followed by 6:07 and then she broke through with a 5:51. The hard work was paying off but she still needed to break 5:50 to get her invite to the big dance.
In the final meet of the season, the one deciding who would go and who would hang up the cleats for the year, she opened up her wings and ran a 5:48. Yep, crossed the line just under the wire, completely spent, and beaming. As for the 5:30 it’s a process and theres a full cross country season coming this fall.
So when someone asks I smile and say in reverant tones, “yeah, she runs the mile”…
